There is a religious base in Jasper and its surrounding area which brings inspiration, morality and ethics to the people, young and old. Jasper traces its spiritual beginnings back to when the city was founded. Even the name was picked from the Bible, and generation after generation used their faith to give them the courage to take them through good times and bad. Some of the earliest settlers were German Catholics who built the cathedral style St. Joseph Church over 120 years ago. Parishioners each spent one day a week building this gigantic and beautiful structure. They did this without the use of modern engineering or today’s tools. St. Joseph Church is on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and is known over the entire State. As the city grew, churches of many denominations became part of the community. Today, there are 12 different denominations covering nine different faiths in Jasper with 19 churches in Jasper and another 42 in the county. The cooperation between these churches is really unique and shows the open-arm acceptance by the people of Jasper.
